Red clay is the signature of this side of town, and it behaves nothing like ordinary dirt. The soils here are iron-rich and the particles are extremely fine, so once clay is worked into wool it is not sitting on the fibre, it is lodged between the scales of it. That is why a clay track mark lightens under a vacuum and then reappears as a rust-tinged shadow the next time the rug is damp. It also stains, permanently, if it is scrubbed in wet — which is exactly what a rented machine does. Getting it out means removing the dry soil thoroughly before any water is introduced, then flushing rather than agitating, and it is the single most common reason rugs come to us from these subdivisions.
