What Lookout Mountain is built from
Stone, shingle and brick houses along and behind the brow, the oldest dating from the resort era at the turn of the last century, mixed with 1950s and 1960s builds and a steady run of substantial modern replacements.

The Lookout Mountain problem
Houses on the brow spend real time inside cloud, not merely under it. When the valley fog lifts and the ridge line catches it, the mountain sits in saturated air for hours at a stretch, and stone and masonry walls hold that cold long after the sun is out. Anything against an exterior wall or over an unheated lower level becomes the coldest surface in the house, which is where the moisture goes. A rug left flat in a room that is shut up for a few weeks is the classic case. The other half of the problem is that these are wood-fire houses: fine soot is slightly oily, it bonds to wool, and it greys the whole field so evenly that owners rarely notice until the rug is next to a clean one.
