Rug Cleaning in St. Elmo

Collection and delivery in St. Elmo are included. We take the rug back to the workshop, wash it properly, and bring it home.

The Houses

What St. Elmo is built from

1880s to 1910s Victorian cottages, foursquares and shotgun houses in the valley at the foot of Lookout Mountain, largely original heart-pine floors over hand-laid stone and brick foundations, with a good number of half-height cellars that were never meant to be dry.

Restorers and second-wave owners who took on a hundred-and-twenty-year-old house and have been unpicking somebody else's 1970s decisions ever since. Rugs are often inherited with the house or bought deliberately to suit it.

What We Find Here

The St. Elmo problem

These blocks sit in the shade of Lookout Mountain and at the bottom of it, which is two separate problems. Cold air drains downhill overnight and pools on this valley floor, so the ground stays cooler and wetter than the same soil half a mile out; and the mountain shades these blocks in the afternoon, so what does get damp dries slowly. Under an old house with a stone foundation and no vapour barrier, that produces a crawlspace running at high humidity most of the year. The rug on the floor above acts as the lid. Wool takes on nearly a third of its own weight in water without feeling wet, so the first honest signal is a smell that comes back every damp week no matter how often the room is aired.

If that sounds like your rug, send the form and describe what you are seeing. We will tell you whether it needs the full treatment or not.
